Renewable Revolutionaries: Vermont Smoke & Cure

From design/build schools to breweries and social entrepreneurs, AllEarth Renewables is proud to have helped innovative businesses and individuals across the northeast generate their own power from the sun.

Vermont Smoke & Cure is a 54-year-old smokehouse that's making meat better for all. They know the importance of maintaining a local connection, as many of the ingredients used in their products are sourced directly from Vermont-- everything from maple syrup and maple sugar to apple cider and cheese. They created a transparent supply chain by being connected to their local farmers and suppliers, and wanted to have the same visibility into how the electricity powering their facilities was being generated.

The company decided to go solar as part of their overall approach to minimize their carbon footprint and the intensity of their energy use. Having solar is an important part of their mission, and when they found out they could get local energy from a local business without any upfront investment, going solar was an easy decision. Now, over half of the electricity they use is from solar generated by two projects, one in Essex and one in Hinesburg.

"I hope to see a lot more Vermont companies with solar as part of their energy mix. It's super easy!"

Solar is also helping them fulfill their duties as a certified Vermont B-Corporation, which require them to take into account decisions beyond the bottom line, in five specific areas of corporate social responsibility. Energy intensity and resource use are one of these areas, and solar fits the requirement perfectly.

The most valuable thing to take away from their solar experience, according to CEO Chris Bailey, is that you can go solar with for no upfront cost, and it's very easy to do. "I think Vermont has a big future with renewables. If Germany can have most of their power from renewables, we can too. I hope to see a lot more Vermont companies with solar as a part of their energy mix. It's super easy!"
