Maine Beer Company co-owner Dan Kleban and his brother both had day jobs when they decided to start their own brewery. They wanted to start a new chapter and create something that was their own, but they knew that if they were going to do it, they were going to do it the right way, so they could go home at the end of the day and say, "We did something better for our community--we made good beer."
From the start, the brothers had always wanted to invest in renewable energy and try to operate their brewery as sustainably and efficiently as possible. In 2015, they made a business decision to invest in a solar project, which includes two AllEarth Solar Trackers, that offsets about 50% of their energy consumption.
Do What's Right is Maine Beer Company's motto, and Dan hopes that people look to the brewery as proof that you can be a small, independent company yet still do some pretty amazing things. Dan believes they have one of the best crews of any brewery--they're extremely passionate, dedicated to their craft, and dedicated to doing what's right. Both at the brewery and in their lives in general, they all embrace what Maine Beer Company is trying to accomplish.
The widespread popularity of their first IPA, "Lunch," was completely unexpected--up until that point, they'd primarily served the Portland, Maine market. A beer and food writer from the Boston Globe got hold of a bottle and wrote an article that ended up setting things in motion, and helped position them as one of the best breweries in the New England.
According to Dan, one of the most rewarding aspects of running a brewery and working in the craft beer industry is watching people drink his beer and enjoy it. As he says, "I don't think it gets any better than that."
